===Marriages and Children===Before 1368 John married Eleanor de Mowbray, daughter of John de Mowbray and Elizabeth de Segrave. They had two children:* Eudes* Eleanor, who married Hugh Poynings and Godfrey Hilton
Eleanor de Mowbray died before 13 August 1417: a little before that date, John married again, his second wife being someone called Margaret or Margery, whose family origins are not known. They had no children. Margaret is referred to in a 1421 record of a presentation she and John made, by her right, to St Peter's, Saltfleetby, Lincolnshire.

===Life===In 1371/2 John became a retainer of John of Gaunt, serving under him in France in 1373, and fighting again in France in the later 1370s and the 1380s.
John was summoned to Parliament from January 1375-6, the writs referring to him a "Johanni de Welle" or "Johanni de Welles", confirming that he was Lord Welles.
In 1378-9 John served with the English garrison at Berwick-on-Tweed. In 1385 he fought in Scotland.
In May 1390 John (representing the "chivalry and valiant deeds of Englishmen") and Sir David Lindsay, then a Scottish knight, jousted at London Bridge: John was unhorsed.
In October 1398 John was present when his brother-in-law Thomas Mowbray left Lowestoft, Suffolk after being banished by Richard II.
In May 1400 John was summoned to pay homage to Henry IV.'Close Rolls, Henry IV: May 1400', in Calendar of Close Rolls, Henry IV: Volume 1, 1399-1402, ed. A E Stamp (London, 1927), pp. 83-85, British History Online, accessed 30 October 2021
In May 1402 he was one of those instructed to proclaim in Lincolnshire the intention of Henry IV to govern well and to counter malicious rumours to the contrary.Calendar of the Patent Rolls, Henry IV, A.D. 1401-1405, HMSO 1905, p. 129, Internet Archive The next year he was commanded "as he will avoid the king's wrath, to cease from giving or granting liveries to any of the people, and from making unlawful assemblies; as the king is informed that by confederacy and for maintenance the said John contrary to the statute has long been conferring divers liveries on great number of the people, and ceases not daily to gather them in unlawful assemblies."'Close Rolls, Henry IV: September 1403', in Calendar of Close Rolls, Henry IV: Volume 2, 1402-1405, ed. A E Stamp (London, 1929), pp. 108-112, entry for 8 September 1493, British History Online, accessed 30 October 2021

===Death===John died on 26 August 1421. His second wife survived him, dying on 8 April 1426. His Inquisitions Post Mortem show him owning land in Essex, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Northumberland, much if it entailed to be settled on his grandson Lionel (son of John's son Eudes) with a remainder interest to the right heirs of John de Welles. They refer to his wife Margery, and state that his grandson Lionel married Joan daughter of Robert Waterton in the parish church of St. Oswald, Methley, on 15 Aug. 1417, and was John's next heir, being age 15 and more.Inquisitions Post Mortem for John de Welles Knight, Mapping the medieval Countryside website, accessed 30 October 2021 His widow, called Margaret in the Close Rolls record, was awarded custody of his lands during Lionel's minority.Calendar of the Close Rolls, Henry V, A.D. 1419-1422, HMSO, 1932, p. 189, entry for 20 February 1422, Hathi Trust
