From the Wikipedia:

"A coat of arms or armorial bearings (often just arms for short), in European tradition, is a design belonging to a particular person (or group of people) and used by him or her in a wide variety of ways."

"In some heraldic traditions (such as the Scottish and the English), an individual (rather than a family) possesses a coat of arms. In those traditions, coats of arms were passed from father to son as legal property..."

This information is borne out by The Heraldry Society in their FAQ.

When I started looking into my family and creating this web site, I really wanted to include a coat of arms. I found many sites that would sell me an "authentic" Sells family coat of arms.

Fortunately, I've been on the Internet long enough to be very skeptical of what I see here. I ignored the offers to sell me a coat of arms and assumed I would would have to do without.

Then a cousin sent me this (click on it view a larger version):

It was sent to Charles DeGrave Sells from the "Heraldic Office" in London. Sounds official! It certainly pre-dates the age of Internet scams.

I haven't explored its origins any further. I'd love to hear more about this subject so, if you have more some information on this subject, either sign th guestbook or with whatever information you might have.
